Why a metal fabricator jumped into panel bending
Sometimes companies require a fresh start, not just individuals.

In early 2021, Joe Bean acquired a 65,000-square-foot facility in Franklin, Tenn., moving his precision sheet metal fabrication business, FlexMet Inc.
Since 1984, Bean has been running California Precision Products in San Diego, mainly catering to the region’s aerospace sector. The shop was equipped with CNC laser cutting, machining, punching, press brake bending, tube bending, and powder coating capabilities. They handled 600 to 700 different part numbers monthly, adding complexity to the job shop operations.
The company's California base was less than ideal due to high taxes and stringent state regulations, which increased overhead costs, making it difficult to stay profitable. Additionally, the location posed logistical challenges when serving clients in the Midwest, Southeast, and East Coast.
Before the relocation, Bean developed a product line—cabinets designed to safeguard ballots. One innovative product under development is a smart dropbox capable of verifying voter IDs to match them with ballots.
"I have a strong interest in this, and we’ve seen success with the product, selling them nationwide," Bean remarked.
An integral part of manufacturing these cabinets is the BCe Smart panel bending machine from Prima Power. This was one of the first pieces of equipment Bean set up when FlexMet started operations in Franklin.

At FlexMet, Bean aims to prioritize his own product lines, despite maintaining some job shop work for long-term clients. Their next product launch will feature outdoor kitchen cabinets and components, with the panel bender playing a significant role in their production.
In California, Bean's enterprise had eight press brakes and one panel bender. Now in Franklin, FlexMet operates with four brakes in addition to the panel bender.
"We discovered the panel bender while exploring automation options for our forming processes. The decision was straightforward," Bean explained. "It has really paid off."
These are the factors that prompted FlexMet to invest in the panel bender, illustrating its value to the company.
