During journalistic inquiries across various villages in Jingyuan County, it became evident that "sulfur smoking" has become a widespread practice, with merchants typically establishing fumigation booths by afternoon, conducting fumigation by night, and proceeding with drying the following day. Such activities are commonplace in the region, and instances of industrial sulfur openly stored in farmers’ yards were noted, alongside visible smokehouses in the streets. Upon inspecting these smokehouses at nighttime, reporters were met with a potent smell that induced tearing and discomfort in breathing. These nighttime operations have emerged as an incongruous sight within the villages, making sulfur fumigation a frequent occurrence for local merchants during harvest seasons.

In response to these findings, the Jingyuan County Food Safety Commission released an announcement on September 2, acknowledging media exposés regarding illegal production and processing methods related to wolfberry production. This issue involved certain local farmers and was taken seriously by the county’s Party committee and government, leading to the immediate formation of a joint investigation team tasked with thoroughly probing the cultivation and processing practices of wolfberry. Those found responsible for violations are set to face strict penalties according to the law. Additionally, the county plans to conduct a special investigation addressing the production, processing, and sale of wolfberry to ensure food safety, with results to be made public in due course to protect community health and safety.
