Quartz countertop installation costs around $125 per square foot, depending on the number of slabs and additional finishes. Extra finishes include:

• Fabrication: Includes cutting countertops to size, shaping the edges, and laying out the template.
• Levelling: Ensuring the surface is level to prevent cracks. Professionals can adjust cabinets using shims or saws.
• Removal of Existing Countertop: Removing old countertops should be done by professionals to avoid damaging cabinets.
• Sink and Outlet Cut-outs: Adding these features will incur additional costs.

From One Room to Three: Maximizing Our Quartz Slabs

We estimated three slabs for our kitchen remodel, which features double islands needing larger solid pieces to avoid joints...

...but the problem was, we still had a lot of quartz left over!

If you're aiming for a beautiful and functional kitchen, you need this!

Solution? Matt used his engineering skills to calculate how to cut each piece of quartz most efficiently for our kitchen from the three slabs. He then figured out how to place these cuts to have major remnants left...

...which were perfectly sized for:

1. Our guest bathroom countertop.
2. Our girls’ bathroom double sink vanity.

How to Lay Out Your Quartz Slabs

Our quartz slabs (learn more about the exact color we chose) measured 131"x63".

Step 1: Lay Out Your Biggest Pieces First

For us, this included our two island countertops for our kitchen’s double islands, plus our sink area countertop (extending under our hidden appliance cabinets).

Use any preferred method to do this (even paper and ruler!). Matt used Excel for its ease and shareability with the fabricator.

Note: Quartz slabs didn't come in the 147" length needed for a solid piece around our sink and under our appliance cabinets. Instead, we opted for the largest piece possible to avoid grout lines around the sink, adding a small section to the right under our right appliance cabinet.

Step 2: Add Counter Edges and Backsplashes Next to the Countertop Pieces

After laying out major pieces, we recommend arranging edges next to those pieces. This maximizes slab utility as countertop edges will usually match the countertop lengths.

Step 3: Fit in Medium, Small, and Miscellaneous Pieces

Next, fit the remaining medium and large pieces in your layout. For instance, we included pieces for the solid backsplash above our stove. (Originally planned for sidesplashes, but it felt excessive once up, so we used the pieces for other projects or gave them away.)

We even used a leftover quartz piece for the shower threshold in our downstairs bathroom remodel!

This approach is akin to adult Tetris!

This strategy saved us significantly. By pre-planning other quartz needs, we essentially got those pieces for free!

How Much Do Quartz Countertops Cost?

Quartz slabs cost: $20.25 per square foot. Total for three slabs (131"x63", or 57.3 sq ft per slab): $3,483 or $1,161 per slab.

Fabrication and installation cost: $39.50 per square foot. Total labor: $5,490.50 for 139 sq. ft. of counter (including custom drain grooves!).

TOTAL COST per square foot of our quartz countertops: $59.75

Our costs were significantly lower compared to the average $70-150 per square foot typically found.
