Downsides to Chromium Plating?

Chrome-plated objects are generally not made of solid chrome. Instead, they are coated with a layer of chrome through a process known as chrome plating. Chrome plating involves applying a layer of chromium to another metal object. Chromium, with the chemical element symbol Cr and atomic number 24, is an additive in steel. The process is designed to improve the object's resistance to corrosion, minimize wear and tear, reduce friction, prevent galling, and, in some cases, enhance its appearance.

Chrome plating is conducted via a technique known as electroplating. This technique involves reducing dissolved metal cations in an electrolyte salt bath to form a seamless metal coating on the desired object. First, any soil or dirt is removed from the metal object, and the underlying metal often undergoes pretreatment before being placed in a chrome plating vat. The type of pretreatment required depends on the specific metal being plated, as different metals require different etching processes to roughen surfaces and prepare them for chrome plating. After preparation, an electric current is run through the plating bath for a set amount of time, which varies according to the thickness of the chrome plating needed and the current applied.
