Observation: - By incorporating the lower-cost pneumatic test into your cost estimate, you are incorporating a risk..IMHO, you should be prepared for your field engineer to be forced into a (liquid based) hydrostatic test by the client or local authorities. Hydrostatic tests are usually more expensive than pneumatic testing.

Just call a local test house.

So much is dependant on the layout, size, test pressure, who fills and empties and dries, how long the test duration is etc etc. Could be $10K, could be $100K

Pneumatic testing of LPG tanks has a certain risk factor involved. Are you sure you want to do it that way?

With hydro there is a lot of cost getting the high quality water (which you should have written into your purchase requirements), transporting it, filling, draining, and drying. The testing itself is often not the biggest issue.
The water quality and posttest drying are both very important.
Pneumatic testing of small, isolated systems is fine.
But read the links from MJC, it gets serious very fast and is prohibited in many situations.

Unless absolutely prohibited to do a hydro test (ex. in a refractory lined vessel/pipeline), I wouldn't even consider pneumatic test. Upvote 0 Downvote

It is not easy to choose the suitable pressure testing machine, what is suit to your needs

Regularly we test the cylinders on half times hiren pressure than the normal working pressure. A 200 bar cylinder is tested on 300 bar. We do the pressure testing with water. The water is just very slightly compressable. That is why if the tank cannot stand the pressure there won&#;t be explosion. The worst case there will be just some water around. Our pressure testing machine help the pressure testing processes in different level of automatization. Powder fire extinguihser testing

You regularly pressurized the powder fire extinguishers with 10-15 bar. That is why we test the tanks with less than 50 bar.  Mainly we offer manual solutions for this area, ready to do the job on site. Our mobile range are the following:

CO2 fire extinguisher pressure testing

CO2 means higher pressure than the powder extinguishers. The CO2 has a liquide and gas phase within the gas cylinder. The gas phase above of the the liquide state is keep the same pressure permananent (~67,5 bar). It is just change very little according to the temperature. The CO2 cylinders regularly used for Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are with 250 bar or maybe 212 bar test pressure.

Low pressure and high-pressure industrial cylinders

For low pressure industrial gas cylinders we offer the FIT50-LOW pressure testing machine. The pressure testing machine is optimized for cylinder with welded cage. A special attachment is designed what make possible a complete automatic cycle for filling/testing/emptying of the cylinder. If you mainly work with high pressure cylinders and just a few low pressure, then you could use the FIT50 as well, but because of the welded cage and the big diameter you will have many extra labour hour.

FIT SERIES &#; pressure testing machine

We produce the testing benches FIT series in 4 main versions, each version with some options as follows:

  1. FIT50: this is a Semi-Automatic test bench. It allows testing 6 cylinders each cycle.
  2. FIT50-DUO: this is a Semi-Automatic test bench. It allows testing 6+6 cylinders each cycle.
  3. FIT-6-EVO: this is an Automatic test bench. It allows testing 6 cylinders each cycle.
  4. FIT-6 DUO-EVO: this is an Automatic test bench. It allows testing 6+6 cylinders each cycle.

FIT50

This equipment allows filling the cylinders with water, testing them with water and finally emptying them from water. We can recover or purge the used water according to the customer&#;s applied testing procedure. The operator has to manually fit the filling heads, the testing heads and the emptying heads on the cylinders before each step.

  • TIMING: to load the bench with 6 cylinders of 50 litres, to test them at 300 bar, to empty them and to unload them from the bench it takes approx. 12-15 minutes. Therefore, you can test approx. 24 cylinders/hour.
  • DRYING: after the testing operations, the cylinders must be dried. The suggested drying equipment are: CIL model or DRY-VAP model.

FIT50-DUO

The unit has the same working principles as the FIT50 model. The main difference is that, we equipped the FIT50-DUOwith two cylinders inverters; consequently, it is possible to operate alternatively on inverter 1 and inverter 2. Operating with two inverters connected to the same pressure testing machine allows increasing the productivity and having the drying system integrated on the bench (see here after about the drying procedure).

  • TIMING: FIT50-DUO allows to test up to 42 cylinders/hour of 50 litres with 2 operators.
  • DRYING: after the test, we have to dry the cylinders. The suggested drying equipment are: CIL model or DRY-VAP model.

FIT-6-EVO

This equipment allows filling the cylinders with water, testing cylinders with water, emptying cylinders from water. We can recover or purge the used water according to the customer&#;s applied testing procedure. The operator has to manually fit the filling/testing heads and the emptying heads on the cylinders before each step. The filling/testing heads of the FIT-6-EVO are specially designed for a fast coupling on the cylinders saving operator&#;s manual labour and time.

  • TIMING: to load the bench with 6 cylinders of 50 litres, to test them at 300 bar, to empty them and to unload them from the bench it takes approx. 10 minutes. So more than 30 cylinders/hour can be tested on the FIT-6-EVO.
  • DRYING: After the test, we have to dry the cylinders. The suggested drying equipment are: CIL model or DRY-VAP model.

FIT-6DUO-EVO

It has the same working principles of FIT-6-EVO model. Main difference is that the FIT-6DUO-EVO is equipped with two test inverters; consequently, it is possible to operate alternatively on inverter 1 and inverter 2. Operating with two inverters connected to the same pressure testing machine allows increasing the productivity and having the drying system integrated on the bench (see here after about the drying procedure).

  • TIMING: the FIT-6DUO-EVO allows to test more than 54 cylinders/hour of 50 litres with 2 operators.
  • DRYING: after the test, we have to dry the cylinders. We suggest for drying our equipment CIL or DRY-VAP models (see here after how to work with the drying equipment).

DRYING SYSTEMS for FIT

The available drying systems are CIL6/10 or DRY-VAP.

CIL6/10

The operating principle is the following: we are blowing hot air into the cylinders. There is two mode to use the CIL drying machine. You can use it beside the pressure testing ramp, or we could integrate the CIL into the FIT modells. If we install the CIL beside the testing bench, then the operator has to move the cylinders manually after pressure tested. If we integrat the CIL into the FIT testing bench, the machine will dry the cylinders in vertical position directly just after the test cycle. To dry 6×50 litres cylinders it takes approx. 18 minutes. If the CIL is included in the FIT, during the drying cycle it is not possible to test cylinders on the FIT50. This means that, if the CIL is installed beside the FIT, the drying time does not affect the FIT productivity.

Installing 2 x CIL, the same productivity of the FIT can be granted. If the CIL is integrated in the FIT, the productivity of the FIT falls down because of the drying time. Customers having the CIL integrated in the test bench usually prefer to have FIT50-DUO. This solution allows having 6 cylinders on test and 6 cylinders on drying, alternatively on the 2 test benches, thus saving time.

DRY-VAP

The operating principle is the following: we blowing first hot steam and then dry air into the cylinders. We could just install the DRY-VAP only integrated in the testing bench. We could deliver all FIT modell with the DRY-VAP. The cylinders are dried in upside-down position just after the emptying cycle. To dry 6×50 litres cylinders, it takes approx. 9 minutes. Customers having the FIT-6DUO-EVO + DRY-VAP, with only one operator, can test and dry up to 30 cylinders/hour of 50 litres capacity. The DRY-VAP assures a high grade of drying performances. After the drying process with DRY-VAP, the average result is to obtain approx. 40 PPM of moisture residual in 50 bar of Nitrogen.

Special machine for water jacket pressure testing

If you need to measure the gas cylinder shape change during the pressure test or after the pressure test then we offer our waterjacket pressure testing machine WINJ72. The water jacket pressure test machine measure the and as an option register the changes. The machine could handle 1 waterjacket. 1 cylinder inspection approximately takes for 1 hour. . Our customer regularly buy 2 water jacket. That is why they could prepare the next cygas cylinder for testing during the machine is working.
