From a collector of silicone's for over 10 years. Yes, to all of your questions silicone is a chemical based medium that produces a soft feeling baby. It comes in many different types from tin silicone, to ecoflex, to platinum silicone. It does have a shelf life even though many will tell you it doesn't. It can split, tear, peel and fall apart.

Everyone says it's how it is mixed and poured I personally don't agree it's just the nature of the silicone. I've had perfect tin silicone dolls 10 years old with no problems and platinum silicone babies 4 years old with problems both poured by what I call silicone experts.

Most silicone's I would say all even the most expensive ones have some small flaws here and there whether it be a bumpy silicone usually from the original sculpt not being sanded enough to be poured smoothly, to blotchy paint this is very common, to the top coat peeling again very common, to the silicone discoloring turning yellow or orange.

Yes, most flaws are visible when you first get the doll, but the peeling of the topcoat which is what you are seeing in the Andrea baby can happen when dressing the dolls if your not careful or something constantly rubbing against the baby in the same place, which is what happened on the Andrea baby.

Silicone is no different then any other medium you have to take care of it and be gentle with it, the dolls are a piece of art. Don't be afraid of silicone just know what it is, silicone is my favorite because I like the feel. The newer ecoflex silicone is definitely more fragile then the firmer platinum silicone, so treat it with care. Most of the time if something should occur the silicone can be fixed and you will never know it had a problem.
